Next week I fly to New York to meet Tom. Then we fly too California to meet Jason. Then at the comic con we meet our doom! Will this be adventure or misadventure? Time will tell, and so will I provided I survive to return and post here.

Until then, entertain yourself with these!

foot down. [May. 31st, 2006|08:09 am]
[mood | oatmealed]
[music |cooling fan]

see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-page_spread

The current entry:
The phrase two-page spread is a redundant term commonly misused to refer to a spread in editorial or book design and format. The term spread refers to two adjacent, facing pages in a magazine or other publication, featuring a single image (such as a photograph or piece of artwork) or a themed group of images (such as a flowchart or collection of maps). The line down the middle where the pages come together is called the gutter.

A spread in the center of a magazine, where the two pages are one physical piece of paper, is called a center spread.

A gatefold or foldout is a page which folds out beyond the edges of the publication. Gatefolds and foldouts are frequently center spreads, but they need not be.

For specific uses, see:

In response to this:
http://www.boingboing.net/2006/05/30/fanatgraphics_oral_h.html
From David Pescovitz, "As a teaser, Fantagraphics is uploading two-page PDF spreads from the first chapter every weekend until August." (emphasis added.)

I didn't go through four years of design school to learn nothing (on the contrary, I went through four years of design school to learn something!) The phrase two page spread is redundant and should not be used. Spread inherently describes two adjoining pages. You cannot have a single page spread. The phrase two page spread is similar to "blue azure lake" in it's redundancy. Does anybody else have any good examples of redundant descriptors?

Ok, nerd out!

this saturday night (which so happens to be april fools day)
karaoke will be sung at Elixer (the intersection of Goodman and Clinton, kitty corner from the cinema theatre). Paul and I should be getting there around 9ish, and be there until whenever. SS Doomtrooper is on tv around 1:30am, so we might leave around then. Come and experience my golden throated crooning. I'm planning on singing Motorhead - Ace of Spades, and Dio - Holy Diver for starters. We'll see how many we can get in.

a distinct lapse in rocking out [Mar. 20th, 2006|12:36 pm]
[mood | excess slack!]

all work and no rock makes Peter a dull boy.

I've realized that the music I am listening to has an immediate effect upon my mood. I've been listening to Slough Feg, Earth Crisis, and ISIS this morning at work and getting piles of things done. This is encouraging.

I like to read a lot, and after having a conversation with Paul last night on the topic I worry that reading too much may help to further alienate me. Reading is commonly done privately or quietly, and a reader might typically regard someone talking to them while they were reading as an interruption. To combat this I've been going out to read when I have the time (to a coffee shop or something similar). I'm hedging, since I'd like to meet more people out, but I'm going to bring a book along when going out alone because reading is better than staring blankly at your thumbs. If I didn't go out I wouldn't meet anyone outside of my house, but I bring along my buffer. I've resisted buying an ipod or other listening device since between that and reading I'd likely be able to completely shut myself off from meeting people. Besides, I prefer whistling when walking.

Reading publicly also has the advantage of being a social catalyst at times. "My, what tome have you got there?" or "Read any good books lately?" are phrases that come to mind. I find it fun to talk with strangers about what they've read or are reading (with exceptions). Reading still doesn't always sprout conversation in public... consider the "Lonely Leafer", the type who sit's and reads, hoping to be noticed for his/her (we need a neuter third person pronoun!) intellectual depth or insight. I think I've done well not intentionally falling in this rut, since it's hard to look cool carrying around Hawthorne, Melville, or The Wind Whales of Ishmael. more on this later! excess slack!

A/V space tonight: Espers [Mar. 13th, 2006|02:12 pm]
[mood | minor slack!]
[music |cranberries - empty]

Espers
Mon Mar 13th
8PM -

Philadelphia based folk sextet Espers have just announced a stopover in Rochester during their North American tour with Stereolab. Two of the musicians in Espers are Rochester natives; Otto Hauser, who also plays for Devendra Banhart and Vetiver, and also Greg Weeks, who founded the group and is a solo musician in his own right. Espers are probably best defined by their unique ability to take simple folk melodies, (especially those inspired by the British isles) and embroidering them with baroque arrangements that feature strings, recorder, autoharp, bells and guitar. Their most recent album for the Locust label is a lush garden of cover songs, paying tribute to Bert Jansch, Nico, and Michael Hurley. And for anyone who is a fan of these musicians, this is an absolutely essential show.

Anybody that reads boing boing already knows this, but gosh darnit, John K. has a blog!!! It made me really sad when the Spumco site went down a few years ago (no more Weekend Pussy Hunt! :[ ) and I began to have a terrible time trying to keep an eye on what my main heroes from the big shot Hollywood cartoonist world was up to. Now I've got something great to peep at. Not to mention Funny Cute!

Friends of Snore & Guzzle:

I am happy to tell you about the release of a new book we’ve made. The
title of the book is "The Best Cure For A Broken Heart." This is a book
that has collected over twenty true stories of love gone sour. In other
words, it’s about people having their hearts broken. The stories are
told in a plain, unvarnished style by ordinary people. But the book is
not just a total downer, it has a sunny side as well. Juxtaposed
alongside the stories are therapeutically hearty soup recipes,
guaranteed to distract you awhile and keep you company. And we all know
what misery loves.

The book is 68 pages long with original illustrations by Barbara
Wilkinson and Shawn Creeden. The book has been printed in a very limited
run, so be sure to pick up your copy tout suite. The book is available
for purchase online, for more details please click the following link:

http://www.snoreandguzzle.com/pages/print/stories%20and%20essays/best%20cure%20pages/soupzine.html

For those of you in the Rochester region, we will be hosting a release
party Thursday, Feb. 16th at 8 p.m., in the A|V Space
(www.artsoundspace.org). The entertainment for the evening is as follows:

+ Reading by Yours Truly
+16mm classroom films, titles include: "I Am Sad" and "My Turtle Died
Today"
+ A variety of soups, catered by Nathan’s Soup & Salad
+ Music by Micah Blue Smaldone
(listen to samples here:
http://www.northeastindie.com/somesweetdayplayer.htm )

Please join me for a little soup on the chin and a few crumbs on the vest
